The Erik Truffaz Quartet is above all a collective, a sound, a group dynamic. At the Festival they will perform with a classical Arabic singer Mounir Troudi.
Starting in 1997 the group was Marcello Giuliani on bass, Marc Erbetta on drums, and Patrick Muller on keyboards for a first album, "Out of a Dream", on the legendary Blue Note label.
For the albums "The Dawn" and "Bending New Corner", the rapper Nya joined the group and brought a bit of an urban, poetic touch. The video for "Yuri’s Choice" helped to spread the word for this music, and at that time the group took inspiration from its Blue Note evening concerts in London, a temple for drum and bass and composed music while on tour improvising bits during sound checks.
The first detour was in 2003 with "The Walk of the Giant Turtle". It was a rock-inspired album that had an organic and bubbly feel. Sound engineers Corboz and Giuliani put distortion on the trumpet, something that shocked Truffaz at first, but he eventually loved the idea and built on it later.
"Arkhangelsk" was the album with a more mature feel: Ed Harcourt, Christophe, two singers, two voices and magnificent songs. This album was not well-produced by the record company, and it stayed under wraps despite its great potential.
In June 2010, Benoît Corboz takes Patrick Muller’s place, after having been the studio sound engineer for the group, starting with "The Dawn".
A new tribute to slow, the group takes on silence and stretching things out. Sophie Hunger, with her marvellous voice, is invited to join the quartet on two tracks (a Dylan cover and an original composition). Marcello Giuliani brings his double bass back and records a track on banjo, and the group is off again for more great adventures.
