Sławomir Elsner's big burning cars set the gallery walls of the Polish Cultural Institute alight in Berlin
At the outset, Sławomir Elsner, a Polish artist who's been based in Berlin since 2002, makes reference to the dark American rock 'n' roll films of the '60s. However, the associations within his very particular aesthetic can also be linked to the present-day - rebellious youths on the outskirts of Paris or Dionysian antics on the streets of Berlin or Warsaw. The burning cars on the large-scale canvas are hypnotic, both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The artist's singular painting technique brings these images to life - visually setting them ablaze.
The works in the show come from private collections in Munich, Cologne and Basel. The show runs between December 9 - February 28, 2010.
