17 years after the publication of Ryszard Kapuściński's book "Imperium", the Zachęta National Gallery of Art presents an exhibition of photographs taken between 1989-1991 - the fruit of the author's journey through the former Soviet Union at that crucial moment in history
Most of the photographs in the collection have not yet seen the light of day, except for a few which have already been published in the album Ze świata" / "From the World. They were found 2 years ago in Kapuściński's private archive. The way the material was organised within his files implies that the writer considered putting together a photographic presentation that would provide a visual companion to Imperium. Today, this idea is carried out in a exhibition consisting of 50 black and white photographs selected from hundreds.
The resulting collection is not merely a photo diary from the journey or material illustrating the book. It is rather an unusual, emotional photo reportage showing people, places and events seen through the universal and curious lens of the writer and reporter.
Through the exhibition, we enter a world of images which are not accompanied by any descriptions so viewers are free to make their own stories. What makes the collection even more personal is that the collection features a selection of photographs from the writer's trip to Pińsk, his hometown.
Curators: Rene Maisner, Izabela Wojciechowska, Anna Tomczak.
The show opens December 17, 2010 at 19:00 and is open to the public from December 18, 2010 until February 20, 2011.
