The 46-year-old painter has been awarded for outstanding artistic achievements
"The council, which is made up of previous prize winners, have decided to award Robert Maciejuk because his work is simply outstanding", explains Jacek Maślankiewicz, chairman of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers, Warsaw Region, "the winners are always exceptional representatives of Polish art, and superb painters".
According to Maślankiewicz, the council's decision was determined by Maciejuk's original artisitc vision, the quality of portraying images, reference to tradition, combined with the artist's own craft.
The Jan Cybis prize is awarded to painters by the Association of Polish Artists and Designers - Warsaw Region (ZPAP). The award was established in 1973, in honor of Jan Cybis, who established the ZPAP after World War II.
Previous winners include: Tadeusz Dominik (1973), Stefan Gierowski (1980), Jacek Sienicki (1983), Jan Lebenstein (1985), Jan Tarasin (1987), Jerzy Nowosielski (1988), Józef Czapski (1990), Teresa Pągowska (2000).
Robert Maciejuk was born on the 4th of April 1965. He completed his studies at Warsaw's Academy of Fine Arts. He has exhibited his work at numerous individual exhibitions, such as Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, Otwarta Pracownia in Krakow, and the Polish Institute in Rome and Berlin. In addition, the artist has also shown his work at a number of group exhibitions, including "Kunst, Europa" at the Kunstverein in Bonn (1991), "Granice obrazu" / "Limits of a painting", "Scena 2000"/ "Scene 2000", "Za czerwonym horyzontem" / "Beyond the red horizon" at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, as well as "Here and Now" at Galeria Zachęta in Warsaw.
Maciejuk received his accolade on the 26th of August 2011, during the opening of the Warsaw Ground Art Festival. As part of the event, Warsaw's 30 galleries present the work of over 100 artists from different generations. The artists shown as part of the festival, include Wojciech Fangor, Jarosław Modzelewski, Tadeusz Dominik, Klan Młodożeńców, Teresa Pągowska and Marek Sobczyk.
"The Warsaw Ground Art Festival is connected with the 100th year anniversary celebrating the establishment of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP)", notes Oliver Hałasa, the festival's spokesman. Seeing that it is 100 years years since the beginning of the ZPAP, the Dom Artysty Plastyka gallery will host an exhibition with work complied from from all the major Warsaw galleries. We want to show, what took place over this time. And in this way, we will give an opportunity to experience a cross-section of the work created by artist tied to the ZPAP."
