The monodrama directed by Romuald Wiczy-Pokojski is an adaptation of Arthur Miller's short story about an American tap dancer who's lured to Berlin with a very lucrative offer from the Führer himself
Arthur Miller's 2002 short story entitled The Performance has been adapted for the stage in a performance that stars Krystian Wieczyński. The show, directed by Romuald Wiczy-Pokojski, tells the story of an American dancer, following a stupendous performance in Budapest, receives a disturbing but highly lucrative offer to perform at a luxurious club in Berlin.
After captivating audiences all over Europe with his tap dancing performance, his talent is noticed by the Führer, who is impressed with the level of training and self-discipline the young man exhibits, believing it to be a good example for Germany. The dancer is soon presented him with an unexpected offer to teach his craft to Germans. The only problem is that May is a Jew.
The shape of One Night Contract is close to what is known as avant vaudeville. The Independent Wiczy Theatre celebrates its 20th anniversary with the premiere of this play, which came about thanks to the support of the municipality's "Step by Step" project, which ties in nicely with the "tap-dancing" theme of the show.
Arthur Miller is one of the most important figures of the XX century literature. Born in New York, he came from a family of merchants impoverished during the Great Depression. He studied at the University of Michigan and started writing for theatre in the 40s. He rose to fame for play in which he showed the failed myth of the American dream: All My Sons (1947) and Death of a Salesman (1949). His best-known work The Crucible (1953) was inspired by the anti-communist activities of the senator McCarthy. Miller stood before the Committee but refused to testify. His plays were extremely popular, also in Poland, staged even in the times unfavourable towards American literature. In 1987 Miller published his autobiography Timebends, which won the Pulitzer Prize.
