The fourth edition of the Kinopolska Festival celebrates Polish cinema with 60 films presented over the course of one week. This year's edition boasts the participation of such prestigious filmmakers as Roman Polański, Jerzy Skolimowski, Andrzej Wajda and Bartosz Konopka, paying heed to those particular productions that have struck the fancy of the Cannes jury over several decades.
In parallel to this headlining retrospective, the programme also features a selection of contemporary productions recently praised at international festivals, such as Marek Lechki's "Erratum", Jan Komasa's "Suicide Room" and Lech Majewski's "The Mill and the Cross". A screening of "Jowita" comes as an homage to the recent passing of its director, Janusz Morgernstern. The Adam Mickiewicz Institute presents three new films in its intriguing Guide to the Poles documentary series.
The framework of the 2011 Kinoposka festival is divided into five sections, portraying Poland in its diversity and complex history through a kaleidoscope of aesthetics, featuring The Polish Masters in Cannes, a review of seven masterpieces of Polish cinema, selected and awarded at the Cannes festival, yet unknown to the mass public; the Contemporary Fictions section, featuring six long feature films by young generation filmmakers competing for the main prize. Poland in Shorts presents a review of twelve short films produced by the Munk Studio and awarded at international festivals. The Week-end of Polish Animation, including screenings, forums and workshops, including a three parts review of the Se-Ma-for productions through the years.
Last year the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Solidarity movement lent a characteristic theme to the previous edition of the Kinopolska festival. This year the legacy and artistic testimonials of the era are showcased in a documentary series. Treading on the success of the first instalment in the series - Wojciech Słota and Marek Kłossowicz's "Beats of Freedom", the remaining four chapters have just completed production and are beginning their tour of the international festival circuit. Kinopolska 2011 presents "Art of Freedom", also directed by Marek Kłossowicz, "Toys" directed by Andrzej Wolski, and "Political Dress" directed by Judyta Fibiger. The three films were recently shown at Minsk's Listapad Festival, with "Art of Freedom" and its glimpse into the exciting, yet treacherous world of Himalayism garnering most of the attention.
Dosed with tasteful irony and humour, the films depict and explore the roots to liberty and creativity in Poland, a country in which individuals were shaped by the hardships of the communist regime with its resulting escapism methods and rebellious statements. On how the distinctive Polish character used art, music, fashion, sport and play to overcome the obstacles of the regime. The documentaries reveal how Polish youngsters discovered independence, liberal thinking and creativity with a few twigs and some wire, how one's appearance was a personal manifest for liberty and how Polish mountain climbers managed to become the best in the world in spite of meagre funds and shortages.
The festival is held this year at the Reflet Médicis in Paris between December 7 and 13, 2011, before travelling through various major cities in France over the course of 2012: Strasbourg, Reims, Toulouse, Lyon, Montpellier, Saint-Etienne, Orléans, Lille and Clermont-Ferrand.
The festival has been run since 2008 by the Polish institute in Paris in collaboration with the PISF (Polish Film Institute) and the association Lumières of Europa, within the framework of the Polish EU presidency 2011.
The festival is organised with the help of such institutions as: Les écrans de Paris, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Studio Munk, Studio Se-ma-for, Filmoteka Narodowa, RATP, Forum des images
