Oskar Koršunovas is one of the most interesting contemporary directors. He has staged productions in Lithuania, Russia, Sweden, and Norway. He is the winner of many awards for directing – including First Fringe and Herald Angels in Edinburgh, the Europe Theatre Prize for New Realities, honours at the Kontakt Festival in Torun, and awards for Best Director of the Season in Norway and Lithuania. In 1998 he founded the Oskar Koršunovas Theatre, where the repertoire is based on modern drama and classics. In the words of the director, modern theatre should reflect the present, and sometimes predict the future (and warn us).
Our Class by Tadeusz Słobodzianek is currently one of the most staged works from the Polish art world. Since the world premiere at London’s National Theatre in 2009, it has shown in Canada, the United States (Philadelphia, Washington, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Chicago), Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Japan, Brazil, Sweden, Israel, Hungary, Lithuania, and Denmark. The Polish premiere at the Wola Theatre was directed by Ondrej Spisak, who was awarded the 2011Felix Warsaw for the production.
In 2012 the Budapest production of Our Class directed by Gabra Mate received the Theatre Critics Award for best performance of the season in Hungary. In Tokyo it was awarded the Yomiuri Theatre Grand Prize for the best performance of 2013. In Lithuania it was given the Critics’ Award for the Best Production of the Season, and for his direction of the Vilnius performance, Yana Ross was named director of the season. The production in Stockholm, directed by Natalie Ringler, was deemed the most significant Swedish production of 2013 by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
In September 2015 Our Class directed by Oskaras Koršunovas will premiere at the National Theatre in Oslo.
