Jan Klata is one of the most interesting theatre directors in Poland of recent years. The style of his "political theatre" can be characterized by strong means of expression. In his plays he manifests on various levels his disagreement with the surrounding reality. Klata mixes texts, undermines father figures and shifts the points of reference which shows a new trend in modern Polish theatre.
"A Piece on Mother and the Fatherland" is based on a book written by Bożena Kleff nominated for the NIKE Literary Award in 2009. Jan Klata, basing on the text creates, surprisingly, not a battle with Polishness, but rather an anthropological study, where nationality is treated as a "foreign body", as an object, which can be observed from the distance, in almost laboratory conditions. Avalanche of bitter words rapidly fills the stage, accompanied by sounds of tribal drums. The director raises the question: Is our civilization really as civilized as we would wish?
The performance received the best director award at the 4th Divine Comedy International Theatre Festival in Poland.
