The annual Finale Gala traditionally rounded up the "Literaturomanie" Festival which for the past three days has transformed Gdynia's Teatr Miejski into a site of a strictly literary events.
In the poetry category, the jury presided by Prof. Piotr Śliwiński, honored a book of poetry by Justyna Bargielska entitled Dwa fiaty (published by Wojewódzka Biblioteka Publiczna and Centrum Animacji Kultury in Poznań). The award for the best prose book went to Taksim by Andrzej Stasiuk (Wydawnictwo Czarne). In the last category, encompassing essay and non-fiction, the award was given to Ryszard Koziołek's book Ciała Sienkiewicza. Studia o płci i przemocy (Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego). The writers received each 50 000 zł.
As it turned out, this wasn't the end to the list of laureates. As in 2007, when Magdalena Tulli received an additional award, the Jury decided to present a Special Award to Małgorzata Szejnert for her significant output in litearary reportage. Szejnert's last book Wyspa klucz (Wydawnictwo Znak) received special recognition from the Jury. Unfortunately, the writer didn't make it to Gdynia, she thanked for the Award via video connection.
The fourth award was followed by another surprise. For its guests, Gdynia prepared a special anniversary publication offering a review of the first five years of the Award, featuring the bios of the laureates and fragments from their books. The book edited by Prof. Piotr Śliwiński and Mariusz Grzebalski will be published in limited edition, and will not enter wider distribution.
In autumn, the winners will return to Gdynia to take part in the special discussions dedicated to their work.
