Three presentations of the newest production directed by Krystian Lupa take place during the Congress as a part of Trickster 2011 project
Imagine…
A night express train stops at a station. A voice on the loudspeaker informs about a necessary transfer, and when a few of the passengers disembark, the train leaevs. At the station (what is the name of this place?) no one seems able to answer any questions, and one can only find refuge in the only decent and warm place of the waiting hall.
Disorientation, fatigue, and stress create - can create - micro-communities. The night places - can place - this community under scrutiny. The night itself can become a moving x-ray image of something much greater -“our universe,” to put it haughtily.
Let us try to give the first move over to the actors. Let them carry their own imagination, concerns, and desires into this space contained in an initial embryo - sketch of a character.
The playwright may then step in and cultivate situtations. Thus the emerging matter grows and develops in an ever-changing environment.
Krystian Lupa
The performance is created in an experimental 'laboratory' work process, through the confrontation of two very different personalities. The director Krystian Lupa cooperates with Dorota Masłowska, an acclaimed young Polish writer.
Krystian Lupa, born in 1943, is one of the most important Polish theatre directors. He been recognised for his interpretations of great European prose. The director has adapted the works of Thomas Bernhard, Robert Musil, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Recently he created his own original play-analyses of pop culture icons, Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol.
Born in 1983, Dorota Masłowska is an icon-writer of contemporary 20- and 30-year olds. She is the author of two novels, "White and Red" and "Paw królowej", and two plays, "A Couple of Poor, Polish-Speaking Romanians" and "Między nami dobrze jest" / "No Matter How Hard We Tried". Deeply grounded in the Polish reality, Masłowska observes the rotten everyday life of our backyards with the sophistication of a perfect sociologist. She describes it in a vivid and stylised language that is sharp and devoid of sentimentality and ornamentation. By contrast, Lupa is a sage, philosopher, and a master who tends to use a dense symbolism, psychoanalysis and dreams in his description of the surrounding world.
