Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź presents an exhibition where light takes centre stage as an essential motif in the oeuvre of many contemporary artists. "Chamber of Light" focuses on the significance of 1920s avant-garde cinematography and its experiments with the matter of light
This exhibition consists of neon light objects, films, video and photos by such artists as Bruce Checefsky, Michael Snow, Paul Sharits, Andrzej Pawłowski, Antoni Mikołajczyk and Kazimierz Bendkowski of Film Form Workshop, as well as the representatives of the younger generation: Stefan Nitosławski and Wojciech Puś.
Józef Robakowski's interest in the matter of light came as an inspiration for the exhibition. Robakowski, who was a pioneer of media art in Poland, became preoccupied with the theme while making his film Test (where the image pulsates with light), and later during the time of his activity as a member of Film Form Workshop. The pinnacle of this inspiration was his joint project in cooperation with Paul Sharits, titled Attention: Light! (2004).
"Chamber of Light" shows how Robakowski and many of his contemporaries were influenced by the avant-garde cinematography of the inter-war period that experimented with the matter of light in the motion picture. The work of Bruce Checefsky, who reconstructed a lost film by Franciszka and Stefan Themerson Pharmacy (1930), comes as an example of this inspiration. Also the exhibited Cineforms (1957) by Andrzej Pawłowski, reach into the tradition of cinematic avant-garde.
The exhibition also showcases the works of artists associated with Film Form Workshop for whom the use of light in photography and film was essential, such as the City Scores series by Antoni Mikołajczyk. Here the light becomes the central theme of the series.
The construction of the exhibition is based on three collections: that of Exchange Gallery, the Muzeum Sztuki in Łodź and the private collection of Dariusz Bieńkowski. The first would never come to be if it wasn't for Józef Robakowski's personal contacts and his artistic relationships with other authors. This allows us to trace the exchange of experiences and inspirations among the most important artists of recent years.
