Young musical hopefuls from across Poland and its Eastern Partnership neighbours have begun applying for the 2013 formation of the ambitious youth orchestra. Bournemouth Symphony conductor Kirill Karabits will lead those chosen for the orchestra this summer, on a tour of some of Europe's greatest philharmonic halls
Auditions are open to musicians between 18 and 28 years of age who reside in Poland or its six eastern partner nations: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldovia and Ukraine. The audition process begins by registering on the official website, www.orchestra.iam.pl. First-round qualifiers through online or postal submissions are then invited to an audition series held in 15 European cities. The orchestra's final formation will be announced on the 11th of April 2013.
The third edition of the I, CULTURE Orchestra will work and tour in 2013. The project originated within the framework of the Cultural Programme of the Polish Presidency of the European Union for 2012. Initiated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the orchestra promotes a permanent change in orchestra education in the participating nations, working toward a strong imprint on the musical map of Europe for future generations. Young musicians are supervised by a group of tutors of exceptional rank, who play in orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, London's Philharmonia Orchestra, the Opera de Lyon and the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra - a rare opportunity, even among the best youth orchestras in Europe. A new conductor and new tutors share their expertise each year with young people who may prove to be the future talents of Europe. The I, Culture Orchestra has toured to prominent stages including the Berliner Philharmonie, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Teatro Real in Madrid, and has performed at London's Royal Festival Hall and at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm.
The orchestra's first edition was conducted by Sir Neville Marriner in 2011, the renowned British maestro. He passed the reigns to the young Venezuelan prodigy Ilyich Rivas in 2012, who was then 21 years of age. This year, Ukrainian-born conductor Kirill Karabits, principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony, takes the I, Culture ensemble for tour dates that include Oslo, the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Helsinki, Moscow and Riga, capital of Latvia. The accomplished young virtuosos Truls Moerk (cello) and Khatia Buniatishvili (piano) will join the orchestra for their performances.
