Nowadays, she works and lives in Berlin, where she studied songwriting at the BIMM (British and Irish Modern Music) Berlin Institute since 2015. Before that, she graduated from music school in Wrocław, getting diplomas for both piano and jazz vocals. In one interview she mentions:
I owe my conscious use of instruments, musical feeling, knowledge of theory and harmonies to my education, but I had to develop my style on my own. I’ve never really felt comfortable with the thought of becoming a professional pianist or jazz singer. I’ve always known that I want to create music, play, sing, and perform.
In order to broaden her sound and stylistic horizons, she decided to get into music production. ‘I started with online course after I got my high school diploma. That’s how I spent the longest holidays of my life. Now I’m studying it at university,’ says Martyna. Nevertheless, she still has a piano in her home in Wrocław. When she’s there, she plays, records, and experiments with different ideas.
She composes her own music, and records and produces it herself. Among her inspirations she mentions English chillout project Bonobo, the ambient Boards of Canada, and master of electronic jazz Flying Lotus. Kubicz is very flexible, she can dive into pop-ish sounds, house, and even minimal techno. In her first song that got popular, Goodbye to the Lullaby, you can even hear some traces of dub. She also often utilises her mature voice to throw neo soul into her compositions. She is also interested in nuanced interrelations of sounds.
Her first release was an EP, Turn the Lights Down, in the spring of 2016. It consists of five tracks, one of which, Hide and Seek, was the BIMM track of the week a few months after its release.
MIN t is to release her first longplay in the spring of 2017 under the Otake Records label. Asked about her new album, she said:
It’s going to be a very personal album. Admittedly, there is no sad coming of age story or deep, internal changes behind its production. I wanted to experiment, try to show a lively feeling combined with electronic sounds. All these tracks are full of emotion, ranging from deep, personal experiences to joyous, invigorating compositions.
She has performed at Open’er in Gdynia, Soundrive in Gdańsk, and Spring Break in Poznań, and also at quite a few events in Wrocław, such as T-Mobile Hew Horizons, Wooded, and WroSound. She has also played some gigs abroad, such as at RixPop in Berlin, Reeperbahn in Hamburg, and Loftas in Vilnius. She also supported GusGus and Vitalic while they toured Poland.
MIN t’s recordings have been remixed by a footwork producer Lux Familiar, and Mislaw, young producer from Wrocław. She has also produced songs for Polish artist Rosalie (Trudno from EP Enuff). ‘Creating beats for someone else is refreshing and allows you to detach yourself from your own musical expectations,’ she explains. She dreams of getting one of her tracks remixed by Mall Grab, a London-based Australian DJ and producer.
