His parents were Greek political refugees, so he was raised in a multinational and culturally diversified community. He took part in Greek minority events, getting interest not just in Greek music, but also in rock and blues. He recollects his youth in Zgorzelec as incredibly inspiring.
In 1970s Skolias began his cooperation with the rock and blues environment active in Wroclaw at that time, represented by bands like Nurt, Grupa 111 or Spisek Sześciu.
His professional career began in 1982 in a jazz rock group Krzak, letting him join the circle of the searching and innovative artists. For over one year Skolias belonged to Osjan group, and from 1988 to 1991 he was a vocalist at Young Power, one of the key bands of Polish new jazz of late 1980s. He experimented with music while in bands formed with Radosław Nowakowski (drummer at Osjan), as well as in other groups, such as Tie Break, Pick Up, Free Cooperation or in collaboration with Tomasz Stańko, Terje Rypdale, Nikos Touliatos, Bronisław Duży, Bogdan Hołownia, Zbigniew Namysłowski and Krzysztof Knittel. Throughout the years he has also been active in the field of theatre and film music.
Jorgos Skolias has never stopped searching for an individual formula for the application of human voice in music. He reaches for inspiration to blues, jazz, rock or ethnic music of Greece, Africa and India. He studies ancient vocal techniques and as one of very few vocalists in the world, he has mastered overtone singing (parallel emission of three different pitches).
