Makary won first prize in the Fine Art category for a series called They Were as well as third prize in the Advertising category for the OE calendar at the PX3 competition, Prix de la Photographie Paris 2013.
The Px3 competition promotes photography as works of art, and endeavors to discover and promote new talents in their artistic environment.
Makary is the only person from Poland to have been awarded in this year's edition. During previous years prizewinners included Szymon Brodziak, Tomasz Tomkowiak and Miłosz Wozaczyński. Several thousand works from over 85 countries were submitted this year. They were evaluated by an international jury. The Parisian gallery Escape Dupon held an exhibition of the award photographs.
Photographs from They Were were presented as negatives of images on which Makary drew signs and numbers. His starting point was numerology and certain symbols by means of which the person on the image can be described. Makary, in his interview for Popmoderna.pl, explains that if we attempt to read the symbols and numbers, then we are able to gather some insight into who the subject of the photography is.
