Karol Szymanowski
1882 yılında Ukrayna’da doğan 1937’de Lozan’da vefat eden ünlü Polonyalı müzisyen ve besteci.
Szymanowski çocukluk yıllarını Ukrayna’da geçirdi. 1889 yılından itibaren önce babası ve sonra özel öğretmenler tarafından piyano ve müzik öğrenimi gördü. 1901-1905 döneminde Varşova Konservatuarı’na devam ederken özel olarak harmoni ve kontrpuan dersleri aldı. Bu arada Varşova'da bulunan Polonya asıllı bestecilerle yakın bağlantılar kurdu ve genç Polonyalı müzisyenleri korumak ve desteklemek için bir kurumda aktif görev yapıp Polonya müzik kültürünün devamını sağladı. Rusya idaresinde bulunan Polonya'da ilerleme fırsatları nispeten sınırlı olduğu için Szymanowski, müziğini Batı Avrupa, Rusya, Kuzey Afrika, Orta Doğu ve ABD'ye yaptığı seyahat ve konser turnelerinde dinleyiciyle buluşturdu.
Müziği üç döneme ayrılan Syzmanski'nin 20. yüzyılın en önemli Polonyalı bestecilerden biri olduğu çok defa iddia edilir. Birinci Dünya Savaşı'ndan önceki eserleri Frederic Chopin, Richard Wagner ve Richard Strauss etkileri altında hazırlanmıştır. İkinci döneminde Uzak-Doğu ve Akdeniz bölgesi kültürleri etkisi taşır ve en iyi bilinen eserleri olduğu şüphesizdir. Üçüncü dönem 1921de başlar Polonya halk müziği etkileri taşır.
Syzmanski'nin dönemin Avrupalı bestecileri arasında benzersiz bir özgünlükte bir çeşit sahne-ve-müzik performansı yarattığını söylemek mümkündür.
