Directed by Jerzy Grzegorzewski, Narodowy Theatre in Warsaw, June 2002.
The Un-Divine Comedy, viewed as a masterpiece of Polish literature, was written by Zygmunt Krasiński (1812-1859) in 1833, when he was a mere 21 years of age. The protagonist of the play, Baron Henryk, lives at the center of the contradictions of his time, with the traditional hierarchy of Christian virtues besieged by the effects of democratic and revolutionary movements. A revolution was afoot on the outside, and unlike many of his contemporaries, the author seems to have no faith in the purity of its aims. The UN-DIVINE COMEDY is considered to be one of the "metaphysical dramas", in which the juxtaposition of divine and human logic, the supernatural and earthly worlds, was designed to highlight the spiritual dilemmas of the hero, who is someone who suffers and rebels while searching for the meaning of his existence between the heavens and earth.
