Directed by Krystian Lupa, Old Theatre in Krakow, May 2002.
The Master and Margarita (1928-39) is one of the most famous novels of the 20th century. Krystian Lupa in describing the story states 'A mysterious guest named Woland appears in Moscow. A professor of black magic, he is accompanied by a series of peculiar individuals... His path through the city spans an invisible network of human relationships, particularly those marked by lies, fallacious philosophies of life, lack of direction, and suffering... While following him we happen upon a poet (the master) and his heretical work titled The Apockrypha of Pontius Pilate, Yeshua of Gamala, and Judas of Kerioth. We also happen upon Margarita and her love for the master and his works - a love that brings not only personal salvation and the rebirth of the burned apocrypha, but also one that links all of these details and events otherwise dispersed in space and time, links people into a mysterious whole, a heretical metaphor that promises liberation from the bonds of evil, from the net of human spiritual error.
