An interview with the band Saagara, whose name in Sanskrit means 'ocean'. The group is made up of: Wacław Zimpel (clarinet, electronics), Girdhar Udupa (ghatam), Bharghava Halambi (kanjira), Mysore N Karthik (violin) as well as K Raja (thavil).
They are some of the most respected musicians of the younger generation in India. Normally based in Bengaluru, they have played some of the greatest concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House. Saagara performs a repertuar inspired by carnatic music, namely the classical music of southern India. Elsewhere, the most popular form in the north of the country is Hindustani classical music.
