The portrait of Poland's first democratically elected president in the post-communist era, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa, shows his strengths and weaknesses. Director Andrzej Wajda's film was written by part-time New Yorker Janusz Głowacki, with rich context given to Polish idiosyncrasies and intricacies, for the particular appreciation of international audiences.
