A cultural centre of East Pomerania, the Pelplin Diocesan Museum was founded by Bishop Stanislaw Wojciech Okoniewski in 1928. The collections, initially gathered at the bishop's residence and the diocesan Curia, were moved in 1988 to a modern annex to the Curia especially built for that purpose.
The holdings come from the churches of the former Chelmno Diocese and include examples of medieval and early modern sacred art. The collection of paintings includes the Torun Polyptych, paintings depicting the Passion from Torun's Church of St. John and works by the Pomeranian masters Herman Han (1574-1628) and Andrzej Stech (1635-1697). There are sculptures from the periods of Madonnas on Lions, international style, Beautiful Madonnas and late Gothic (about 1500). There are elements of reredos altars and church interiors. Decorative arts include masterpieces by goldsmiths from Gdansk, Torun and Nuremberg such as liturgical vessels, monstrances and reliquaries, as well as textiles from around 1560 to 1800, manuscripts and old printed texts, with a Gutenberg Bible from the Franciscan monastery in Lubawa.
