I, CULTURE - the Cultural Programme of the Polish EU Presidency heads to countries beyond Poland's Eastern border. In the Ukrainian capital, a conference on the 2nd of September introduced the upcoming calendar of events and presented the concept and key points of the Presidency programme
The calendar of events in Kiev introduces Polish art and culture to Ukrainian audiences and provides many unique opportunities of mutual exchange between artists and audiences from the two countries.
The calendar of events in Kiev is also enriched with flagship projects of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council, produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute:
Taking place in Kiev's Sofia Square on the 4th of September, the project is comprised of research sessions specific to each capital, as well as open sewing workshops, aiming to create an awareness of each person's active engagement in culture and the role of crafts
the showing in Kiev on the 3rd & 4th of September was part of a world-wide tour of the performance inspired by Stanisław Lem's fiction, and his witty and poignant diagnosis of the contemporary world
The Ukrainian edition released in June with Ukraine Week includes works of Miłosz recorded by prominent contemporary writers Serhiy Zhadan and Taras Prohasko, with a soundtrack by Nostri Temporis ensemble.
The concert will take place at Kiev's National Opera on the 27th of October. I, CULTURE Orchestra is made up of young and talented musicians from Eastern Europe who are given the opportunity to work with the most eminent teachers from leading orchestras in Western Europe.
THEATRE
In theatre, notable performances are:
Teatr Provisorium and Kompania Teatr's "Ferdydurke" and "The Brothers Karamazov" (3rd-4th of September),
The Chorus of Women's "This is the Chorus Speaking" (3rd-4th of September),
"The Hunger of Knut Hamsun" (4th of September) taking part in the Ukrainian DimChimer Festival
Paweł Passini's "Turandot"(5th of September)
Showings of Białostocki Teatr Lalek puppet theatre (13th-14th of September)
KTO Theatre's "The Blind" (16th-17th of September)
A lecture-performance (25th of November) on local Polish theatres
as well as ongoing theatre workshops (18th of July-6th of November) for young ukrainian artists, hosted by young Polish directors and playwrights.
Various interdisciplinary events, installations and performance art actions will fill the streets of Kiev, among them "Solidarity Camp"(7th-11th of September), an interdisciplinary installation of historic workers' sheds from the Gdańsk shipyard, and Polish ABC (4th-5th of October), which makes the names of acclaimed Poles emerge in public spaces of the capital, spelled out with huge characters.
MUSIC
Highlight performances include an installment of the Karol Szymanowski "Music Without Borders" (15th of September) project, Ukrainian-Polish alternative music meetings (16th-17th of September) "In the Garden of Light" (30th of September)performed by the Poznań Boys' Choir, and Polish Sacral Music Gaude Mater concert (21st of October).
LITERATURE
Young Polish poets will animate an edition of the touring Spoke'n'Word festival (9th of October), which will run after the Poems on the Underground programme (26th of September – 9th of October). Another open literary event is the Poetry Salon's guest evening, organised by Anna Dymna (14th of October).
Poland's animation history is brought to life in Kiev, aspiring to bring international recognition to the sixty-year history of Polish animation (23rd-30th of October)
"Mania", a 1918 film starring the legendary Pola Negri will also enjoy a special screening in Kiev (29th of October)
"The World From Dusk Till Dawn" series of film maker workshops will result in a cinematic portrait of Kiev (15th-18th of November)
