After 17 years of dynamic artistic activity the Twożywo Group is putting an end to their work. It presents their latest and last project at the "WYbór obRAZ + Nihil Negativum" exhibition - a workshop based on the 14 publications of Emil Cioran (1911 - 1995), a Romanian poet, essayist, philosopher
Based on excerpts of Cioran's works, Twożywo's Mariusz Libel and Krzysztof Sidorek created a brand new collection of prints and graphics, which was published as a collector's edition album.
In the text accompanying the exhibition,Stach Szablowski asks:
What are those graphics? Illustrations to Cioran? Acts of deconstruction of his literature? Affirmation or criticism of his thoughts? And what is the Cioran`s text itself? A character, a subject, a material? Who is the author of this book? Twożywo or maybe just the Romanian thinker?
Mariusz Libel explains:
What we lack in everyday life, we found in Cioran. He is undoubtedly a difficult writer, as a result of hermeticism, but through exaggeration and emotionality. We saw the potential and depth in him. The world needs more such views on reality. Cioran complains, defies existence, contemplates - from a broad perspective - on metaphysical matters, the human being and civilization; the fact that apart from extreme attitudes there is something else in between. Having read his books, we selected the most interesting fragments and elaborated. Thus what we present in the Atlas of Art is an interpretation of Cioran's work. Our texts are just a small part of it. Plus graphic ideas.
At the Łódź exhbition, the artists also return to the previously unrealised project Nihil Negativum - which is linked with the one described above. The artists explained that the project serves as a supplement to the Cioran project, made up of 26 murals, each of which contains a letter of the main slogan as part of the main theme. "We thought of publishing it in a book, in which 'Nihil Negativum' would be the bookmark. It's just an author's extra, a sort of appendix to the whole. It differs in form, but is somehow similar - it`s also black and it will probably fit with Cioran," they say.At the opening of the exhibition Krzysztof Sidorek and Mariusz Libel officially announced the decision to put an end to all activities under the Twożywo name.
Exhibition opens on February 18 and runs through April 21 2011.
