"Castorp" is the book from Paweł Huelle, the Gdańsk-based author of "Weiser Dawidek" ("Who Was David Weiser?"), "Opowiadania na czas przeprowadzki" ("Moving House: Stories") and "Mercedes Benz"...
Castorp is the newest book from Paweł Huelle, the Gdańsk-based author of Weiser Dawidek / Who Was David Weiser?, Opowiadania na czas przeprowadzki / Moving House: Stories and Mercedes Benz. The action of the new novel is set, of course, in the Tri-City area, and the story focuses on... Hans Castorp, a student of the Gdańsk Polytechnic Institute mentioned by way of digression by Thomas Mann in The Magic Mountain. Huelle's book is the story of Castorp's first love, set in the seaside resort of Sopot in the golden age of this retreat. The book is a formal experiment that attempts to situate Mann's epic tradition within the complex of contemporary narrative experiments and games.
Paweł Huelle is a writer, journalist, lecturer at the University of Gdansk, and a member of the PEN Club. His first novel Who Was David Weiser? (1987) won him the Kościeliski Prize.
