Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) - Ukrainian national poet and painter, a major figure of the Ukrainian national revival. In 1847, for his political activity in the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius and promoting Ukrainian nationalism, Shevchenko was punished by exile and compulsory military service. Released in 1859, he died a couple years later in Petersburg.
