Jacek Hugo-Bader’s White Fever is a story of a journey across Siberia from Moscow to Vladivostok in a modified Russian hammer-reparable Jeep in the middle of winter
Released in English by Portobello Books and translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, Biała gorączka / White Fever: A Journey to the Frozen Heart of Siberia, is one of 9 books nominated in 2012.
The journey takes place, as the Telegraph puts it, "across a land that is slowly dying and populated by the homeless and the hopeless". Polish writer Mariusz Wilk adds "the post Soviet world described by Jacek Hugo-Bader is a reality in delirium tremens…Tourists don’t venture into these areas, travel agencies don’t recommend such places. It’s a space filled with vagabonds of all sorts". Along the way, Jacek Hugo-Bader encounters reindeer shepherds, nomadic tribes, shamans, followers of arcane religion. The Times’ Iain Finlayson calls the book "A witty, inspiring account of an odyssey".
The finalists are announced at the beginning of August 2012 and the award ceremony takes place on September 5th 2012 in London’s Hatchards. The Authors' Club Dolman Travel Book of the Year, first awarded in 2006 is one of the two main British awards for travel books.
