Giuseppe Verdi's "Joan of Arc" is Wrocław Opera's newest production, performed for the very first time by the opera company under the direction of Natasza Ursuliak
Originally premiered in Milan on February 15, 1845, Joan of Arc was first staged in Poland at Warsaw's Grand Theatre
Among the shorter of Verdi's operas, Joan of Arc nevertheless retains a great deal of musical interest. Wrocław Opera 's director (and the production's musical director) Ewa Michnik describes it as:
The opera features much march-like music, since its dramatic action takes place during the Hundred Years War. At the same time, its score is also rife with lyricism.
Michnik also points to the fact that Joan's vocal lines cover an incredibly large range.
Director Natasza Ursuliak's main intent is to instill within thecharacter of Joan of Arc a strong woman prepared to fight for herbeliefs: "In so doing we hope to tell the story of Joan of Arc from amodern perspective, underpinned with the historical sources we have atour disposition".
Ursuliak has taken the decision to change the original librettoand cast the character of Giacomo not as Joan's father, but as apriest:
A priest who manipulates Joan. Our heroine, therefore, struggles to mediate between the actions of two men: Charles VII, whorepresents political authority, and Giacomo, who represents theChurch. They each use her as a means of achieving their own goals, andhaving done so, sentence her to death.
Evgeniya Kuznetsova and Anna Lichorowicz will sing the role of Joan, while the role of Charles VII will be divided among Evan Bowers,Nikolay Dorozhkin and Ivan Kit, and the role of Giacomo will be sharedby Mariusz Godlewski and Bogusław Szynalski.
