Content
The Saagara ensemble is made up of artists from Poland and India. Ghatam Giridhar Udupa, Bharghava Halambi and K. Raja are some of the most respected Indian musicians of the younger generation. Based in Bangalore, they perform all over the world at the most prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall or the Sydney Opera House. Wacław Zimpel is a classical trained clarinet virtuoso with a strong presence on the improvised music scene. His projects often invoke traditions and rituals of many different cultures. Saagara is a meeting of two worlds: India's ancient carnatic music, with its sophisticated rhythm and melody system, and the European music tradition. The band's repertoire includes both traditional carnatic music and the musicians' original compositions. The clarinet parts rely on Indian rhythms. Accompanied by the percussion instruments, they oscillate between Western melodics and the raga system – the Indian scales that form the basis of the compositions.
In March 2014, Saagara did their first concert tour, including performances at Poland's most prestigious concert halls, such as the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio or the Wrocław Philharmonic Hall. On 12th November 2015 their first album titled "Saagar" was released. The material for the album was recorded in Bangalore in February 2015. The album release was accompanied by a concert tour, including performances in many cities across Poland and Ukraine.
