The core of the exhibition is selected from works at the collection of Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, which deal with the question of religion and spirituality. As a starting point, the curators were influenced by several works from the Warsaw collection, researching on such artistic phenomena as the unexpected alliance between the Roman-Catholic Church, avant-garde artists during the Martial Law in Poland in the 80s, as well as the contemporary conservative and patriotic visual culture, which tries to embrace the subversion and radicalism of what was so far linked with the left wing art.
As a continuation of the four-month collaboration between the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and SALT in Istanbul and Ankara, Rainbow in the Dark will be complemented by a film and workshop programme at SALT Beyoğlu in Istanbul. The first part of the collaborative project includes the main exhibition, Into the Country, on view at SALT Ulus in Ankara, between 11 September - 01 November, 2014.
The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, as part of the cultural program of the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the Polish-Turkish diplomatic relations throughout 2014.
