This autumn, photographer and performance artist Kuba Bąkowski and photographers from the Czułość Gallery will spend time in Canada developing new and interesting photography projects.
Czułość is an independent Warsaw gallery founded in 2010, which focuses primarily on contemporary photography, treating it as a medium of contemporary art, focusing on the process of developing the sensitivity of the creators of the young generation, and not presenting the finished achievements of recognized artists. The international team of Czułość Gallery unites artists such as: Nampei Akaki, Stanisław Legus, Bao Ting, Johann Winkelmann, Vova Vorotniov and Janek Zamoyski.
The Canadian partner of the project is Regart, Centre D'Artistes En Art Actuel, who invited members of Czułość Gallery to create and present an outdoor photographic installation as part of the autumn photographic season. In the program for 2018-19, Regart will present a series of events and exhibitions presenting various approaches to the subject of ‘co-operation’ in the field of visual arts.
The artists were invited to stay in the gallery space between 19th October and 4th November 2018 in order to create their works, which will be presented in 7 exhibition windows on Saint-Laurenta street in Lévis for 3 months (from December 2018 to February 2019). During the visit in Canada members of Czułość Gallery will also take part in a meeting with the public at VU PHOTO (30th October), a center specialising in contemporary photography, to explain their common practice and make contact with the artistic milieu of Lévis and Québec City.
The cooperation between Czułość and Regart will be continued in 2019 – Canadian artists will be invited to stay and work in Warsaw. This exchange is part of a long-term bilateral cooperation, during which strong relationships between Polish and Canadian artistic practices (artists and curators) are established with the potential for further cooperation in a sustainable and creative manner. Czułość Gallery was invited to Canada by Amelie Laurence Fortin, the artistic director of Regart.
Czułość Gallery’s artistic residency is not the only Polish photography event in Canada this autumn. In November, Polish photographer and performer Kuba Bąkowski will be working on the next edition of hi on-going project Ursa Major in Dawson City in the Yukon.
Ursa Major is a series from somewhere on the border of photography and performance art. The main motifs are the North Star and the Ursa Major constellation. According to Bąkowski, they are cultural codes which are recognisable at every latitude and longitude and can be used as the basis for international creative initiatives. With the help of Dawson City residents, Bąkowski will prepare a special performance which he will then photograph. The artist was invited to Canada by the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture
Both photography projects in Canada are organised in co-operation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, within its America Programme.
