Podsumowanie
This year’s edition of the Bridging Europe Festival in Budapest will focus on the countries celebrating their centenaries of regaining independence: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.
Content
The Bridging Europe Festival was created on the initiative of the prominent Hungarian composer Ivan Fischer, the head of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the Müpa Budapest Cultural Centre in 2013.
Each year, the festival focusses on the culture of a different European country. So far, the cultures of the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, France and Spain have been presented. This year’s edition will put the spotlight on four Baltic states, which are celebrating 100 years of independence in 2018.

The festival will open on 16th September 2018 with a concert by Sinfonia Varsovia conducted by Andrzej Boreyko and with an appearance by Piotr Anderszewski, an outstanding Polish-Hungarian pianist. The programme of the opening performance will combine the musical traditions of Poland and other states in the Baltic region. It will include pieces by Arvo Pärt and Peteris Vask, as well as Polish classics such as Symphony no. 4 (Symphonie Concertante) op. 60 by Karol Szymanowski and Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra.
The Polish programme will include a multimedia installation entitled Paderewski Remixed prepared by the London-based collective Yeast Culture. The installation presenting the life and work of Ignacy Jan Paderewski will available to the public in the foyer of Müpa Budapest for the entirety of the festival.
Bridging Europe will also present a number of Polish music chamber concerts: the Budapest Festival Orchestra will take on Adam Jarzębski’s instrumental music and the vocal and instrumental works of Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki and Marcin Józef Żebrowski. The duel of two virtuosos Jakub Jakowicz and Kristof Baráti will also be a highlight. The concert will be in honour of the centenary of the birth of legendary Polish violinist Henryk Szeryng.
In addition to the classical programme, festival-goers will have the opportunity to hear Polish folk by the Warsaw Village Band, as well as Polish jazz during a special gala Polish Jazz/Four Pianos. Leszek Możdżer, Marcin Wasilewski, Paweł Kaczmarczyk and Pianohooligan will perform.

The word ‘folk’ can often box in musicians and force them to craft their sound to fit the traditional vibe of Polish folk music. The modern Polish folk scene tosses this limit on creativity out the window without forgetting their roots. These six bands continue to innovate and blend genres seamlessly. Folk your life up and enjoy!
