Maps are not only about borders, cities, rivers and mountains, they are also a collection of curious facts about places presented in meticulous drawings. Aleksandra and Daniel Mizieliński reveal on their website:
We drew 4 thousand illustrations over a period of three years and also created two fonts of our own. 51 huge maps guide the readers across 6 continents, inviting them to peek into the Icelandic geysers, track down traces of Egyptian caravans across the Sahara and marvel at the ruins of ancient Mayan cities in Mexico. In England they can play cricket, practice yoga while in India, and in China they are invited to taste centenerian eggs.
Aleksandra and Daniel Mizieliński are graduates of the Graphics Department at Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts. They have created many innovative and visually dazzling websites and authored a number of highly popular books. Their book debut entitled D. O. M. E. K. (H.O.U.S.E.)was a telling and humorous presentation of 35 unique pieces of architecture, created by some of the world’s best architects. It was presented with the 2008 Book of the Year title by the Polish IBBY section and was also released in England, Belgium, Italy, Germany and China. The second title in the series was D.E.S.I.G.N., which demonstrated 69 renowned design items, picking from a list of objects of daily use. The array spanned across the past 150 years of interior and industrial design, introducing the classics as well as the utter originals - such as a bed in the shape of a boxing ring, a graffiti-decorated chandelier and the skeleton-mirror. Accompanied by the text from Ewa Solarz, D.E.S.I.G.N. presents pieces authored by Le Corbusier, Philippe Starck, and many others. Mizielińskis’ educative series is completed with the S.Z.T.U.K.A (A.R.T.) volume, which introduces kids to the world of contemporary art.
Innovation, sense of humour, and a fine drawing line have continued to form the couple’s unique style in their subsequent book projects. Miasteczko Mamoko / Welcome to Mamoko, a magical vision of a litte town was released in Belgium and Italy and Co z Ciebie wyrośnie / What Will Become of You - a catalogue of the world’s funniest professions was presented with the Honourable Mention of the 2011 BolognaRagazzi Award. It was also listed among the 2011 winners of the White Ravens title, presented annually by the Internationale Jugendbibliothek in Munich.
