"Me, That Is, Tequila" is about a forty-year-old man, who stands above a psychological precipice – desperately seeking his real "Me"
Arkadiusz Jakubik stars in this monodrama, directed by Michał Siegoczyński, he fights with and eventually kills his "I" in order to live. But the point of no return is the death of his band's percussionist.
This is a sea of words which flow forth from the protagonist, in a proud monologue of self-preservation, survival and creation, claims the show's director. But in the course of speaking a different reality becomes apparent, an internal one, previously ignored, unwanted. Is this an opportunity for change? Could this represent a universal sign of humanity?
The play's main character plans his own death although loss thwarts his plans, leaving him with life. And this life that becomes his hardest calling. The protagonist believes that he is the reincarnation of Che Guevara, Jesus, Roman Polański
and Mick Jagger. He's a jaded idol who has already achieved everything he could hope for. He shares his observations in the course of concerts, various romances and through living the life of a pop icon. But his only real desire is to die a spectacular death.
I met Michał Siegoczyński, a monodrama specialist, with a unique ear for hearing and staging the truth, explains Arkadiusz Jakubik. But a journey with Michał, just as my friends warned me, is not the easiest of journeys. We embarked on the "Tequila" journey half a year ago and a lot has happened along the way. This is the first time I've encountered such an intimate method of working in theatre. When two men start to really talk to each other about things that are sometimes not that pleasant, it nevertheless inspires you to open up to and trust in the other person. Michał, in particular, encouraged me to improvise scenes. And, after a certain time, on the basis of our discussions and improvisations, Michał brought in segments of the text. Although, the 'Tequila' script rapidly became replaced by improvisation. On the one hand, I found that slightly regrettable, but on the other hand, I found that what remained was closer to the truth.
For Jakubik, who is one of Wojciech Smarzowski's favourite actors, playing the character, turned out to be a dream come true. A year ago he formed the band "Dr. Bear" which also appears on stage, accompanying him in the course of the performance.
