Radio Germany records the performance, organised in cooperation with the Polish Institute in Dusseldorf. The Marcin Wasilewski trio play songs from Faithful - the newest record by the band which has kept its original squad since the beginnings of its career in 1993. Marcin Wasilewski on piano, Sławomir Kurkiewicz on double-bass and Michał Miśkiewicz on drums begin their performance at 8 pm.
Don Heckman of Los Angeles Times thus described the effects of this 'fidelity':
Their years together have resulted in an ensemble with an utterly symbiotic creative flow, solos darting through collective passages as the music streamed fluidly from one selection into another. Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz play with a fertile combination of swing and subtlety…Wasilewski’s piano soloing displayed a coalescing talent, a potentially emerging jazz star in his own right.
The ensemble continues to play together since its quick rise to success in the beginning of the 1990s. They have reached a special depth in the interaction, which is unique, and developed a very fine ensemble dynamic game in which each individual makes the music speak. Buoyed by a warm, round sound, the trio's music flows from the stage taking audiences on an exciting adventure.
The story of Marcin Wasilewski's band, formerly known as the Simple Acoustic Trio goes back to the beginning of ‘90s. Marcin Wasilewski and Sławomir Kurkiewicz began playing together in 1990 when both were 15 year old students at the High School of Music in Koszalin. The first edition of their trio was launched the following year. In 1993 Michał Miśkiewicz joined them on drums and the trio’s line-up has been stable ever since.
Both individually, and as a group the members of S.A.T., the musicians have performed with prominent international jazz stars such as Jan Garbarek, Manu Katche, Louis Sclavis, Dino Saluzzi, Palle Danielsson, Jon Christensen, Bernt Rosengren, Arthur Blythe, Joe Lovano, John Surman, Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, Gianluigi Trovesi and also have worked with Tomasz Szukalski, Piotr Wojtasik, Michał Urbaniak, Janusz Muniak, Zbigniew Namysłowski. Since 1994 the musicians of Simple Acoustic Trio worked with Tomasz Stańko as members of Stańko quartet. This co-operation became a springboard for their artistic and commercial success. Tomasz Stańko argues that
In the entire history of Polish jazz, we’ve never had a band like this one. I’m surprised by these musicians every day. They just keep getting better and better.
Thomas Conrad who reviewed their newest record for the Jazz Times, comments
Marcin Wasilewski does not think like other jazz pianists. His improvisational underpinning, his sense of musical space and his aural imagery are so fresh they are initially mysterious, then get more so. The same can be said of his trio as a whole with bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz...It takes nerve for a young trio to create music of such stillness, such patience. The fact that three three have played together since they were teenagers is audible in the way they trust the epiphanies they collectively come upon.
