Images remain for long periods of time, the photograph the result of interaction of two people - determined in a matter of moments. Bolesław Lustoławski, who goes by Bo, and who immortalised the faces of Szymborska, Penderecki and Paloma Picasso, talks about work and relationships as a portrait photographer for 40 years at the October Gallery
The interaction between the photographer and the photographed is a delicate balance of interdependence involving submission, control, relinquishment and obedience of roles. In the introduction to Lutosławski's book Portrait Photographer, we read,
Portrait photography is created in a fraction of a second by at least two people, two different personalities, a model and a photographer, in a moment of special affinity, a kind of spiritual kinship. This is so unique to photography, so intense, so refreshing that I feel like I am starting all over again every time I meet up with someone for a session.
Photographer and writer Bo Lutosławski has worked in theatre, opera, the orchestra realm and ballet, with his photographs published in periodicals including The Independent, The Guardian, Vogue, Newsweek, Harpers & Queen, and The Illustrated London News, and used for posters and television programmes. He has lectured in film and photography throughout the U.K. and published several books in Polish. His work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Europe.
At London's October Gallery in Bloomsbury, Bo Lutosławski will be holding a talk on his work: what makes for great portraits, meetings with incredible people and working as a technical photographer in a variety of complex situations. The Dynamics of Portrait Photography talk takes place on Saturday the 20th of July at 3 pm.
