The grand stage of the Kraków hosts the world premiere of "Little Lord Fauntleroy", based on the young adult novel of the same title by British author Frances Hodgeson Burnett
The performance is based on the touching tale of a young boy named Cedric, who leaves his modest home in America to live in a mansion with his rich grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt in England. The sudden upheaval in the life of the young heir will prove as much of a challenge to the bitter old man. The arrival of the boy with a heart of gold at the Dorincourt Castle will transform the old Earl beyond recognition. The characters in the story face stereotypes and prejudices which continue to haunt humanity today, pushing them to seek answers to age-old questions regarding the difference between good and evil and the guiding principles in our daily lives.
The performance is meant for audiences of all ages. Its author (music and libretto) is Steven Markwick who, following his graduation from the English department at the University of East Anglia, studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He gained fame with Mesmer, which won the prestigious Vivian Ellis award in 1986, The Secret Garden which premiered at the King's Head Theatre in London and is now performed at Krakow's Bagatela Theatre. Steven Markwick works as a composer and director at London's Polka Theatre for children.
The Polish production of Markwick's Little Lord Fauntleroy is directed by Janusz Szydłowski, with set and costume design by Anna Sekuła and music by Sebastian Perłowski. Performers are soloists of the Kraków Opera and guest soloists, the Choir, Ballet and the Orchestra of the Kraków Opera, including Mateusz Kałucki, Dominik Dworak and Daniel Kukurba.
