The program of the Review included films of the twenty-first century, among others adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel "Norwegian Wood". The audience had the opportunity to watch a blockbuster based on a comic book ("Death Note"), a war story with David Bowie in one of the main roles ("Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"), animation ("The Girl Who Leapt Through Time") and a documentary showing the aftermath of the great earthquake that struck eastern Japan in 2011 ("Roots"). The Review also featured classics: "Tokyo Story" (directed by Yasujiro Ozu), "Yojimbo" (directed by Akira Kurosawa) and "The Woman in the Dunes" (directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara).
The classic Japanese cinema is highly appreciated by critics and audiences throughout the world, and Akira Kurosawa is mentioned among the greatest artists of world cinema. Jerzy Skolimowski, director of "Four Nights with Anna", the film for which he was awarded Special Jury Award at the 21st Tokyo International Film Festival in 2008, is one of the filmmakers who are interested in Japanese cinema as well as other aspects of Japan's culture. In 2012, he was artistic director of Polish Film Festival 2012 in Japan, co-organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
Japanese Film Review begun with special screening of the film "Pacchingi!" ("Break Through!" - the only free screening - Sunday, 16th of June, 2013, 4.00 pm), followed by a meeting with the director Kazuyuki Izutsu, hosted by a film critic and journalist Tomasz Raczek.
The opening ceremony of the Review took place on the same day. It was a closed event with screening of the film "Norwegian Wood" - adaptation of the novel by Haruki Murakami. The opening was attended by Mrs. Akie Abe - Japanese Prime Minister's spouse.
The Review was accompanied by an exhibition of Jerzy Skolimowski's paintings titled "Ślady Tokio" ("Traces of Tokyo"), which was opened on the same day (16th of June, 2013) at the Skwer Gallery.
The Japanese Film Review 2013 in Poland was a project associated with the Polish Film Review 2013, which will be held in several Japanese cities, including Tokyo, starting in November 2013.Organizers: Polish Filmmakers Association, Polish Film Institute, Skopia Film
