The dancer Iwona Olszowska conducted workshops and presented her solo piece "Spacer" / "A Walk" in Kiev Centre of Performing Arts
The piece performed by Olszowska was part of the "Theatre Workshops for Young Ukrainian Artists" series, which engage numerous Polish artists. Workshop sessions with Iwona Olszowska took place between the 25th and 31st of July and the final day crowned the experience with a showing of the partcipants' accomplishments.
Iwona Olszowska is a dancer, choreographer and an instructor of modern dance. She teaches developing an awareness of the body and employs improvisation as performance. She is artistic director of EST (Experimental Dance Studio) in Kraków. Iwona teaches in Bytom, at Hurtownia Ruchu and the PWST (National Higher Theatre School) in Kraków, and at the University of Rzeszów.
She conducts numerous courses for dance instructors in Poland and abroad.
Olszowska gained her experience in dance centres in New York City and while attending open courses at George Mason Unicersity in Washington and at schools in Alabama and Calgary. She has participated in numerous workshops organised by Śląski Teatr Tańca (Silesian Dance Theatre), Centrum Animacji Kultury (Culture Animation Centre) and held alongside dance festivals all over Poland.
At present, Iwona Olszowska concentrates on solo dance pieces and creates choreography for theatre groups: Teatr Rozmaitości from Warsaw, and Teatr Stary and Teatr Słowackiego from Kraków. She has performed in the United States, Canada, Great Britian, Norway, Germany, Portugal and the Czech Republic. Her work as choreographer and the consequent pursuit of her own creative path was honoured with numerous prizes.
Ukrainian Les Kurbas National Theatre Centre was started up in 1996. The Centre comprises departments devoted to several areas: research, culture, and a creative laboratory of art and theatre. The Centre instigates and supports various artistic experiments and proposes global networks of formulas for theatre work. Theatre is taken up as a means of developing the spiritual space and creating a new language.
Among major goals pursued by the institution are:
- Intercultural dialogue between Ukrainian and international artists.
- Writing the history of 20th century Ukrainian theatre
- Creating a wide range of cultural projects, aimed at reintegrating national culture within a global context
- Forming modern formulae of theatre and artistic education
- Analysis of innovative and alternative proposals within the cultural policy of the state
