Poland will be the honorary guest at the 27th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (25th April – 1st May 2018). It is the largest book fair in the Middle East – in 2017, over 1320 publishing houses from 65 countries participated. This year’s attendees will have the opportunity to see a unique exhibition for kids – Bookworms: Insects in Polish Illustration for Children. The exhibition is a preview of a cross-sectional publication devoted to the history of Polish illustration, edited by Anita Wincencjusz-Patyna, which will be released in 2019.
In Polish kids’ books, one can find many different insects: cheating fleas, globetrotting flies, elegant bugs in fancy attire, impervious ladybugs and sinister mosquitoes. The walk around, dance, feast, create forest orchestras and set out on all kinds of adventures. The Bookworms exhibition will present Poland’s most beautiful publications in which the main characters are… insects.
The influence of Polish illustrators in shaping children's imagination is invaluable: starting from the 1930s (Anna Gramatyka-Ostrowska, Jan Marcin Szancer), through the renowned Polish School of Illustration in the years 1950-1980 (Antoni Uniechowski, Olga Siemaszko, Jan Młodożeniec and Janusz Stanny), all the way to contemporary artists (Jan Bajtlik, Małgorzata Gurowska, Katarzyna Bogucka, Marianna Oklejak, Emilia Dziubak and Piotr Socha). Their whimsical illustrations of bugs will be on display in Abu Dhabi.

But that’s not all! Visitors will have the opportunity to create their own original insects, as well as enjoy short animations depicting Polish insects in the geographical and cultural context of the Arab Emirates. They will also have the chance to discover Polish regional music: a special concert is planned by the band Tęgie Chłopy. Apart from the concert, the artists are preparing dance workshops for kids, introductions to instruments such as a clarinet, a trumpet, a tuba, an accordion, or violin, competitions and other surprises.
The exhibition of Polish illustration at the book fair in Abu Dhabi is intended for recipients of all ages, but of course above all for kids! Shaping the sensitivity of the young readers to illustrations is one of the missions of the exhibition’s organisers. Co-operation with this new geographical region is also of strategic importance for promoting Polish culture. Abu Dhabi is one of the most fascinating cities in the Middle East. A multi-ethnic society is the source of a dynamically developing cultural offer.
