"The text is the same, the music is the same", Zimerman says now of the Piano Concerto, which Witold Lutosławski dedicated for him 25 years ago, "and still I can see so many details now which I didn‘t notice before […] It is startlingly dramatic and full of incredible energy".
Zimerman doesn’t visit Poland frequently. Four years have passed since his last tour, during which he performed five concerts on the occasion of 100th anniversary of Grażyna Bacewicz’s birth. Now the pianist wants to pay a tribute to the composer whom he describes as an "exceptional patriot".
The Piano Concerto was commissioned by the Salzburg Festival. Its premiere took place on the 19th of August 1988. The orchestra was conducted by Lutosławski, with Zimerman as soloist. Nowadays, the piece continues to occupy an important position in the pianist’s repertoire. The artist stated in a conversation with Tadeusz Kaczyński, musicologist and co-founder of the Romuald Traugutt Philharmonic: "Lutosławski responded to my humble question about whether he would be interested in composing a piano concerto by saying: I will, I will write it for sure – I have been carrying a great variety of ideas in my mind for years."
Zimerman performed the concerto to begin the Lutosławski Year 2013 in Singapore on the 5th of January, then to acclaim in London on the 30th of January. He has performed it in Paris on the 24th and 25th of January, in Berlin on the 15th -17th of February. Now he has scheduled the right opportunity to bring the piece to Warsaw. During his conversation at the RMF radio station, he said: "I have offered to play Lutosławski’s concerto at the Warsaw Autumn in September. Currently I am awaiting the reply."
Jerzy Kornowicz, the president of the Composer’s Association, said to the Polish Press Agency:
We would absolutely love to host that concert. We are currently carrying out intense negotiations regarding the matter. We will release the information about their outcome as soon as we are able to confirm it.
The concert would take place at the Warsaw Philharmonic.
