In 2015, Polish music will feature at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, The Great Escape in Brighton, Liverpool Sound City and Jazzahead. This year, Don’t Panic! We’re from Poland (DPWFP) has already visited Eurosonic, MENT and Tallin Music Week, and it will commence the summer season with an event in Poland – the Poznań-based Spring Break festival. As part of the showcase, Don’t Panic! We’re from Poland will present Soniamiki, Olivier Heim and Iza Lach. Culture.pl, a brand of the Adam Mickiewcz Institute, is a partner of the event.
From 23rd April, Polish music will be promoted at the most important jazz fair in Europe – Jazzahead. But it’s more than just a fair – it’s also a jazz festival. Each year a different country presents their musicians. For the first time Polish artists will perform – the official showcase programme includes a concert by Atom String Quartet.
In May, Don’t Panic! We’re from Poland will return to the British festival The Great Escape. The numerous successes in previous years have established the project’s strong position. The Brighton festival will feature performances by Julia Marcell, Fismoll, Olivier Heim and Sonar Soul. Besides the DPWFP showcase, each of the artists will perform a concert in the festival’s main line-up. The Polish delegates will also take part in networking sessions.
DPWFP’s next stop is Barcelona. This will be the fifth time that the Primavera Sound festival has resounded with Polish music. Primavera Sound is one of Spain’s biggest and most opinion-forming festival dedicated to the world’s contemporary music. Four artists from Poland were invited to participate in this year’s edition of the festival: Rebeka, Zamilska, Stara Rzeka and Thaw. The selection was made by, among others, Alberto Guijarro – the artistic director of Primavera, who, thanks to IAM invitations, is a constant visitor to the OFF Festival in Katowice.
The summer festival set will be concluded by the presence of Polish delegates at Liverpool Sound City.
Regular visits to the industry’s most important fairs and festivals allows Polish music to appear on foreign markets and to make business contacts. In Autumn DPWFP will visit fairs including Reeperbahn in Hamburg and Womex in Budapest.
Don’t Panic! We’re from Poland is a programme to promote Polish contemporary music. It stages concerts, showcases, panels and conferences. As important as it is to present Polish musicians, the project doesn’t forget to create a friendly space for networking activities. This year the list will be supplemented with an important tool – a database of musicians. A jazz database will be launched first, followed by a pop/alternative one.
During the six years of DPWFP's activity, Polish musicians have visited the most important events of Europe, America and Asia, including SXSW, CMJ, Culture Collide in the USA, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City in Great Britain, Reeperbahn Festival, C/O Pop in Germany, Noorderslag in the Netherlands, Waves Vienna in Austria, Tallinn Music Week in Estonia, Primavera Sound in Spain and the Japanese Tokyo Jazz Festival. In 2014 the project also appeared in Istanbul, Hamburg and Seoul – overall 50 events in 15 countries, promoting 90 carefully selected artists. The project has also published numerous music publications, including two Don’t Panic! We’re from Poland compilations of contemporary music (2014).
