The Open Culture Resort ties in with the artistic, cultural and seaside holiday traditions of Sopot
The idea invoked by the organisers is the impact of culture on social change, and concepts of the European Year of Volunteering 2011. Young artists and activists, mixing various forms of artistic expression, strive to unlock the narrative potential of the city that lies in its history - the most significant and most controversial events, urban legends and traditions.Sopot is considered the birthplace of Polish jazz. Sopot’s famous Opera Leśna was the venue for the Wagner festival in the inter-war period, and now hosts the International Song Festival. This was also the headquarters of the famous SPATiF (Association of Polish Artists of Theater & Film) and the National Art Gallery, both gathering places for Poland’s bohemian artists.
The Open Culture Spa transforms the 187 bus line which goes round the city into an art line - the so called ART bus. All the artistic events will be located en route, along with a planned open air gallery. Local artists will "tame" the urban space along the artistic route. All the 187 buses will be decorated with reproductions of works by local painters and printmakers.
The programme of the Open Culture Spa will feature the following actions carried out within the urban space of Sopot and its vicinity
Crossactions: Urban Tales - exhibitions in selected shop windows, as well as private gardens and porches
Literary Sopot - presentation of works by authors associated with Sopot
Out de Bicz! - shows staged within the urban space of Sopot; Ateliers Brodwino – series of workshops and installations by Aleksandra Chomicz and Antonio Xavier
Sopot Residents - short films about famous inhabitants of Sopot, presented in the Sports Museum and in places associated with those people; a multimedia performance inspired by the poetry of Leśmian, given in the area around Opera Leśna by the Sopot Dance Theatre.
Within the framework of the project entitled Off Centre/Poza Centrum, an art performance will take place, with the use of nearby blocks of flats and a flyover; at the city marketplace, special room will be made for selling contemporary art - Sopot Art Market. Young artists will present their works during a series of concerts and video shows - Open Source Art.
The events will be accompanied by the We are More! International Conference, a gathering for persons interested in the issues of free culture, increasing the scope of participation, ecology, democratisation of production and dissemination of cultural content. In addition, the Open Culture Spa will include the The Festival of World Cultures -Trans Borders / Poprzez granice - and an interdisciplinary artistic civic project, making use of the new media and named World Cafe: Democracy – Art Sopot 2011.
The project has been produced in cooperation with the City Hall of Sopot, Baltic Sea Cultural Centre and Culture Action Europe, a non governmental organisation grouping the representatives of over 10,000 cultural institutions
