A type of "architectural tai-chi" that uses the forces of nature to its advantage, Ex.Terra, a project by Marta Nowak and Iman Ansari is amongst the twenty-five winning proposals fostering creative debate on urban recovery in the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy hit in October 2012

In order to source ideas on how to safely rebuild the Rockaways which were among the hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, MoMA PS1 and MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design initiated a call for ideas. The sustainable waterfront requires alternative housing models, inventive social spaces, urban interventions, new uses of public space, the rebuilding of the boardwalk, protection of the shoreline to actions to engage local communities.
Amongst the winning proposals is Ex.Terra - a project by Marta Nowak and Iman Ansari's AN.ONYMOUS. Sherrell Dorsey writes for Inhabitat,
Ex.Terra calls for the creation of new ground elevated ten to fifteen meters above sea level, and the structural system is able to resist - and at the same time - capture the energy of the wind and the water. It connects to the existing subway line, bridges and roads in the Rockaways, plugging the city into this infrastructure [...]. The solution is designed to respond to the potential climate conditions over the next two to three hundred years (versus thirty to fifty years), where the entire peninsula could be entirely under water. The key element of the proposed designed is the reliance on natural energy. Taking advantage of the daily cycle of nature, such as water tides, sunlight and high wind velocity, the project is able to harness these elements in order to create a self-sufficient community.
Ex.Terra is on display as part of EXPO1: New York exhibit at MoMA PS1 and VW Dome 2 in the Rockways - the areas temporary relief and cultural center.
Founded by Iman Ansari and Marta Nowak in December 2012, AN.ONYMOUS is a platform for social and cultural investigations, theoretical debates, and design speculations surrounding the future of our environment.
