Two books by Polish authors have been nominated for the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, the most important prize for children's books in Germany. Both - Sebastian Cichocki’s S.Z.T.U.K.A. and Anna Czerwińska–Rydel’s Wszystko gra - were included in the shortlist for the category of non-fiction.
S.Z.T.U.K.A. written by Sebastian Cichocki, called Sommerschnee und Wurstmaschine in Thomas Weiler's German translation, was released in 2011 in Poland as the fourth volume of the award-winning S.E.R.I.E.S. series. The previous works in this series are H.O.U.S.E., D.E.S.I.G.N. and F.A.S.H.I.O.N.
S.Z.T.U.K.A., as well as H.O.U.S.E. and D.E.S.I.G.N. was created by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizieliński. This is not the illustrators' first success in Germany – the translation of their book Maps (Alle Welt. Landkartenbuch Das) spent several weeks at the top of the list of bestselling children's books.
The second book in the finals of Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis is a translation of Wszystko gra written by Anna Czerwińska-Rydel with illustrations by Marta Ignerska. The book was published in Poland in 2011 by Label Publishing House and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The book was previously awarded with, among others, the main prize in the category of non-fiction at the Bologna Ragazzi Award 2012, which is considered the most important contest of children's books and illustrations in the world. The book was translated into German by Olaf Kühl.
The Polish books are the only translations in the category of non-fiction. The other nominees are - Der Kartoffelkönig by Christoph Niemann, Gerda Gelse by Heidi Trpak, Fräulein Esthers letzte Vorstellung by Adam Jaromir (illustrations by Gabriela Cichowska) and Mein Opa , sein und der Große Holzbein Krieg by Nikolaus Nützel.
The winners will be announced on October 10th, 2014, at the Frankfurt Book Fair .
