A selection of texts by Wisława Szymborska has been published under the title Elogio dei Sogni by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera
Wisłąwa Szymborska, 'Elogio dei sogni' - 'In Praise of Dreams'
Greatly admired by Italians, Polish poet, Wisława Szymborska's volume Elogio dei Sogni / In Praise of Dreams, arrives on newsstands on the 27th of December 2011. The volume opens a new edition of the series of volumes Un di poesia Secolo / A Century of Poetry which will appear in the daily Corriere della Sera.
The new initiative, of the largest and amongst the oldest and most reputable daily Italian newspapers, has been announced as a major literary event.
The poems of the Polish Nobel Prize winner kick off a collection of 30 volumes of poetry, the most prominent artists of the twentieth century, the second volume is dedicated to greek poet Constantine Cavafy - 3 January 2012, then Pablo Neruda - 10 January, Fernando Pessoa - 17 January, Derek Walcott - 24 January, Alda Merini - 31 January, as well as the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca - 7 February, Joseph Brodsky, Marina Tsvetaeva, Thomas Stearns Eliot, Nazim Hikmet, Jack Kerouac, Eugenio Montale, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jacques Prévert, Rainer Maria Rilke, Giuseppe Ungaretti, and William Butler Yeats.
The series creators intention was to mainly direct the volumes at young Italians. Among them are many lovers of poetry who are especially active on the Internet. This is evident from the large number of websites devoted to Italian poetry.
The editor of the poetic series, Nicola Crocetti explained the decision to open with a volume by Wisława Szymborska because of the Polish poet's extraordinary popularity in Italy and worldwide.
"Wherever she travels, a huge number of her fans gather as if she was a famous rock star", says Crocetti.
In his opinion, the Nobel Prize winner's poems reflect everyday life and are full of irony, which appeals to today's youth.
Each volume has been edited and introduced by the most eminent scholars of Italian literature.
In Praise of Dreams is the latest work of the late eminent Polish philologist, translator of a whole galaxy of contemporary Polish poets, Pietro Marchesani, who died in late November 2011.
