The Gdańsk Polytechnic student was one of six finalists in an international competition for best yacht design – the ShowBoats Design Awards in the Young Designer of the Year 2016 category.
Marlena Ratajska is a student at the Architecture Faculty of Gdańsk Polytechnic, but she is currently based in Switzerland where she works for an architecture firm. Her previous work experience in yacht stock-taking inspired her to use the knowledge she gained there for her master's thesis. This in turn gave her the courage to take part in the prestigious international competition for yacht design, the ShowBoats Design Awards. Ratajska described entering as a spontaneous decision, which, nevertheless, has brought her international success through being shortlisted for the Young Designer of the Year 2016 award.
The participants were tasked with expanding a concept for a 45-metre motor yacht into a full design. The project was supposed to meet the specific expectations of the future owner of the yacht – an Italian fashion designer. The owner wanted the vessel to be luxurious and have adequate entertainment and leisure facilities for her and her friends.
In Ratajska's design, the upper deck is a private space, housing both the owner's quarters and the captain's bridge along with a separate vertical communication system. Below, on the main deck, the aft was turned into a dining area with a teppanyaki grill, two spas, a leisure room and a beauty salon. In the front, the author created an open dining-entertainment-cinema space with a Jacuzzi nestled in the bow. The lower deck is divided into three parts. Guest quarters with two bedrooms, a gym and a sauna, as well as the crew’s quarters are located in the centre, while the aft has been turned into a swimming area consisting of a beach club, a bar and a pool.
The winner of the main prize was Baoqi Xiao, student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Marlena Ratajska was awarded with a trip to two shipyards in the Netherlands and Germany.
The competition is organised yearly by Boat International Media, a publisher and organiser of yacht events and competitions. Every year in February, the media group announces the finalists of its competitions: the prestigious World Superyacht Award and the Young Designer of the Year Award.
