Fryderyk Chopin. Zatî Gölgelik (Polish: Ciennik Osobisty, English: Personal Gazebo/Diary) is a sound installation developed for the Chopin Year 2010 and premiered at the Warsaw University Library’s gardens in summer 2010. The installation, with synchronized Turkish subtitles, is on view at the Istanbul Technical University's Taşkışla courtyard until June 6th, 2014.
It consists of readings of passages from Chopin’s letters (in Polish) translated into in modern sound art spirit by Wrocław composer Sławomir Kupczak. The sound layer is presented spatially and allows to get deeper into Chopin’s personality and his complicated relationships with the world of his time. The work plays with the tension between the inner space of the gazebo and the intrusion of city environment, subtly referring to and dialoguing with the soundscape.
Playwright Anka Herbut says:
Fryderyk Chopin. Zatî Gölgelik is a sound installation, woven from bits of Chopin’s letters and music, subject to an experimental arrangement. It is an attempt to summon a mental space, one that emerges from his work―a space attracting with its interplay of words, feelings, and melodies.
In the open gazebo, one can hear glimpses of Chopin’s ego, his inner oscillation, his state of mind as a homesick émigré. The ciennik is stretched between a compulsive need for another human being and a feeling of being surrounded by strangers, the elusiveness of reality and tangibility of music, the curse of imagination and hard facts.
Soundscapes From Poland

The installation, with synchronized Turkish subtitles, is on view at the Taşkışla courtyard in a structure especially designed by Ahmet Sertaç Öztürk. In Poland, it was one of the pioneering projects of its kind, realized within the framework of the Turning Sounds 6 meeting, an international network of sound events/venues in city spaces (from 2008).
