Showered with international awards, Marta Górnicka’s revolutionary theatre project is moving into the world once again. She will present two of her most important performances, Magnificat and RequieMachine, at prestigious venues and festivals in France and Germany.
The National Theatre of Strasbourg is the starting point for the tour. It is an important place in the history of the Chorus of Women
. Władysław Broniewski
’s texts were inspired by the RequieMachine play. In an interview with culture.pl, Marta Górnicka
talked about her ideas:
RequieMachine is a huge humanist essay on the contemporary system of work. I hope that it will be a radical and politically powerful performance, and that it will convey the story of people stuck between the terror of unemployment and being totally overworked.
Will the Chorus move the French audience? We will find it out on 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st March and 1st April at the National Theatre in Strasbourg. The next stop of the Chorus is the Dresden and Bürgerbühne Festival (21-23 May).

The season will close with BERLINER Festspiele. We're going to Berlin with the "Magnificat" and "RequieMachine", stopping along the way for the British European Arts and Theatre Festival Nottingham (26 and 27 May). It is the fulfilment of dreams, because none of the Polish theatre artists have performed on the German scene for decades - Marta Górnicka happily admits. The Chorus of Women will be available to the German audience on 1st, 2nd and 3rd June.
In 2011's "Magnificat", the second performance of The Chorus of Women the team confronts the most important image of femininity in the Church – the figure of the Virgin Mary. Quotes from the Bible and British TV star Nigella Lawson's recipes collide with fragments of Euripides' Bacchae, which are mixed with bangs, flashes, snapshots and quotes from Gazeta Wyborcza (a major daily paper in Poland) by the choir.
Marta Górnicka - an actress, director and singer, and graduate of the Warsaw Theatre Academy and Krakow Academy of Dramatic Arts graduate, has once more started to mix choir with theatre.
She started three years ago with a modest performance "This is Your Choir Speaking" in the Warsaw Theatre Institute. During the performance, 28 amateur actresses of various professions and ages stood on the stage next to each other.
I wanted the choir to be one of the heroes that does not work as mass, but is a collection of personalities commenting on reality. From the beginning I knew that the choir was supposed to have an anti-system attitude, and to be sharp, political, and measured with uncomfortable topics. We discuss stereotypes, social norms, religious, economics - explains the director in an interview with culture.pl .
