Björk, the legendary Icelandic musician, is collaborating with Polish composer Sławomir Zubrzycki, using a unique instrument he has constructed based on 15th-century plans by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Just a couple of months after releasing her 9th album Vulnicura, Björk has decided to make another version of it called Vulnicura Strings . Björk posted the news on her Facebook page:
While i was working on vulnicura , it became one of the most magical thing both musically and spiritually to unite the electronics and the acoustic instruments in an almost romantic way - to prove they can coexist! That positive tango was a proactive counterpoint to the lyrics of the album.
This time round, Björk wants to add new string sections. This version of the album is designed to let the audience indulge further in “the wooden timeless side of this music”. She will collaborate with Icelandic musician Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and Polish composer Sławomir Zubrzycki. Zubrzycki mastered the viola organista, a musical instrument he built on his own. It was invented by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago but almost completely forgotten until today. Zubrzycki came across the instrument while trying to re-create another one – a bowed clavier. A viola organista looks like a piano, but sounds more like a string instrument.
Vulnicura Strings is due for release on 4th December 2015 and is available for pre-order.
Born in 1963, Sławomir Zubrzycki is a multi-instrumentalist – he plays the piano, clavichord, and claviola. He is also a composer and constructs musical instruments.
He studied piano and modern music at the Academy of Music in Kraków. After graduation he continued studying piano at The Boston Conservatory of Music.
He has performed both as a soloist and in the company of prestigious musicians and orchestras including the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra, Capella Cracoviensis, Toruń Chamber Orchestra, Imperial College London Sinfonietta in Poland and around the world in Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Ukraine and USA.
He worked with Polish Television to produce the educational programme Wszystko Gra (It's All Music To My Ears) and has also worked on Sesame Street.
