Singing Alfredo in a new production of La Traviata at Teatro alla Scala Milan, one of the most sought-after lyric tenors of our time opens the new opera season.
“O gioia ch’io non conobbi, esser amata amando”, with Verdi's 200 anniversary in mind, his La Traviata is chosen to open the Teatro alla Scala 2013-2014 season. The opera is staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov, who also created the set design, conducted by Daniele Gatti, with Diana Damrau as Violetta Valery, and Piotr Beczala as Alfredo Germont. The premiere takes place on the 7th of December (coinciding with the consecration day of Milan's patron Saint Ambrose) and runs until the 3rd of January 2014.
In an interview for Culture.pl, the Polish-born Beczala, comments on the Verdi Year,
The Verdi Year started for me with a premiere at New York Metropolitan Orchestra, where the Rigoletto was performed, in May I will performed in the München Bayerische Staatsoper with La Traviata. In June in the Parisian Opéra Bastille, and then at the Salzburger Festspiele festival, where I performed one of Verdi's most beautiful pieces - Requiem. The year end in Milan's La Scala.

Repeatedly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike for not only the beauty of his voice, but also for his ardent commitment to each character he portrays, the 46 year old Beczała was Alfredo for the first time 18 years ago. He told Corriere della Sera that this is the 8th staging of the 1853 La Traviata opera that he has performed in, "and it's always a great experience" he added, "When I decided to be a tenor, it was a shock for my father. He wanted me to be an engineer. I had to put up a fight to follow the path I chose for myself".
